Defining the Conflict

"I saw the notice on the bulletin board about peer mediation.  I didn't pay much attention.  Now I've got this problem with Ted.  Maybe I should check
into this mediation stuff a little more."

15 Step Peer Mediation Program

The Peer Mediator should:

1.   Inform others of the mediation services.
2.   Get consent from those involved in the conflict to start the mediation program.
3.   Find a safe and private place for the sharing of information.
4.   Tell everyone involved of the importance of listening carefully while others speak.
5.   Ask everyone to tell what happened, have everyone else listen carefully.
6.   Ask each person to sum up what the other person said.
7.   Help everyone discover their feelings about the situation.
8.   Provide an overview description of the situation, telling when there is agreement and when there is not among the participants.
9.   Have the participants tell you whether they agree with your overview or not.
10.  Ask each person to suggest what actions to take to resolve the conflict.
11.  Help the participants to decide which choice is best for everyone involved.
12.  Ask everyone to agree to one decision.
13.  Ask everyone to agree in writing to the chosen solution.
14.  Make an appointment to come together again to see if the solution is working.
15.  Repeat the process whenever the request is made by a participant.
